NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old mentally challenged woman was allegedly killed by stray dogs in Arjun Dumri village, Kushinagar district, on Tuesday night. Hata police station in-charge Ramsahay Chauhan said they received a call around 7 pm about a dead body being attacked by stray dogs in a paddy field near the village panchayat building. Police reached the spot, drove the dogs away, and took the body into custody.

The woman, identified as Madhuri, often wandered around the village. Villagers said she had been missing since Monday and her family could not find her. On Tuesday, her body was discovered in the field, with parts eaten away by dogs. Locals claimed stray dogs have been a long-standing problem in the area, citing past incidents where a cow and a goat were killed. Police have sent the body for a post-mortem to confirm the cause of death. Across India, cases of stray dog attacks have risen sharply in recent years. Supreme court on Monday ordered that all stray dogs be captured and kept permanently in shelters within eight weeks.
