Partition's horrors remind all of need for harmony, unity: PM Modi

NEW DELHI: On a day which the country commemorated as the “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the day serves to not only remember the suffering and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of Indian history but also reminds people about the responsibility to strengthen the spirit of harmony and unity that binds the country together.“India is today commemorating the tragedy of the country’s partition through Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. This is a day to remember the suffering and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history,” Modi wrote on X.The PM further said, “It is also an occasion to honour their courage and resilience. They showed the bravery to start anew despite enduring unimaginable hardships. Most of those affected by the Partition not only rebuilt their lives but also achieved extraordinary accomplishments”.

Home minister Amit Shah said the Congress party had divided the nation into pieces, hurting the pride of Mother India. “The Partition led to violence, exploitation, and atrocities, and millions of people endured displacement. I offer my heartfelt tribute to all those people. The country will never forget this history and pain of the Partition,” Shah said, commemorating the lives lost during the tragic event.Defence minister Rajnath Singh said that even today, every Indian feels empathy for the affected families. “We are fully committed to further strengthening social harmony in the country,” he said.Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan quoted Spanish philosopher George Santayana’s famous “those who forget history are doomed to repeat it”, saying the day was a reminder for avoiding mistakes which led to partition and the tragedy that followed.
