Renukaswamy murder case: Kannada actor Darshan arrested; held after SC quashed bail request

Kannada film star Darshan Thogudeepa was arrested on Thursday after the Supreme Court cancelled his bail in the Renukaswamy murder case. The arrest came hours after his friend and co-accused, actress Pavithra Gowda, the prime accused in the case, was taken into police custody.According to police sources, Darshan was detained at his wife Vijayalakshmi’s residence in Hosakerehalli, Bengaluru. As per sources cited by the PTI, the actor had planned to evade arrest and surrender in court, but they received a tip-off about his whereabouts and acted swiftly.A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan quashed the interim bail granted to Darshan by the Karnataka High Court, saying the order was issued without proper consideration of witness intimidation allegations and other irregularities. The Karnataka government had challenged the HC’s decision in the apex court.Welcoming the verdict, Advocate DL Chidananda, representing the State, said, “The Supreme Court said that the High Court has not followed the principles of law which apply for granting bail. It also reiterated that the rule of law prevails in the country and, however influential an individual may be, they must be treated in accordance with the law.”Congress leader Rizwan Arshad supported this, saying, “They have built up a crystal clear case. Despite that, he got bail… As a government, we had to appeal against the bail, and that’s what we did.”Karnataka CM’s legal advisor, AS Ponnanna, argued that granting bail would have damaged the case. “The state government and the prosecution agency were vindicated… It was the state government’s decision that, in a case like this, where a serious offence has been registered, granting him bail would hamper the investigation and trial, as he is a powerful person. They did not want him to use his muscle to derail the prosecution’s case,” he said.Darshan has been named in the chargesheet over the killing of 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a Chitradurga resident whose body was found in Bengaluru’s Kamakshipalya on 9 June 2024.
