OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed admiration for India’s embrace of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, predicting the nation could soon become the company’s largest market globally. Speaking on Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath‘s “People by WTF” podcast, Altman lauded India’s proactive approach to AI, highlighting its potential to drive societal and economic benefits.Responding to Kamath’s query about AI’s opportunities for India, Altman underscored the “incredible energy” and willingness of the Indian populace to integrate AI into various aspects of life.“The excitement, the embrace of AI in India, and the ability for Indian people to use AI to just, sort of, leapfrog into the future, and invent a totally new and better way of doing things, and the economic benefits that come from that, the societal benefits, if there is one large society in the world that seems most enthusiastic to transform with AI right now, it’s India,” Altman remarked.

Sam Altman is “coming soon” to India

Altman emphasised that India’s “momentum is unmatched anywhere in the world”, adding, “I think India may be our largest market in the world, at some point, in the not very distant future.” He added that the “energy is incredible” and he is “looking forward to coming soon.”He further elaborated on the shift from being merely a consumer to a producer in the AI space.“I feel like the question really is, how do we transition from being a consumer to be a producer, where we can build something that other people use outside of India? That was what I meant. I mean, there’s lots of things happening there, but that was the thing I meant. I think that’s really happening already in a big way,” Altman said.The OpenAI chief particularly praised the entrepreneurial energy dedicated to building with AI in India, expressing hope for its continued growth.
