Drug overdose? Bengaluru medical PG student found dead in Belagavi hostel room; was undergoing treatment for depression

BELAGAVI: A PG student from Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) died of suicide by allegedly consuming an overdose of medicine on Monday.The deceased is Dr Priya Karthika, 27, from Bengaluru. She was pursuing postgraduation in psychiatry at BIMS.BIMS director Ashok Shetty visited the hostel room and said the student finished her hospital duty at 6.30pm and returned to her room. It is learnt that she passed away around 8pm. She was receiving medical treatment for depression, and overdose of medicine proved fatal. “Clear information will be available after the post-mortem and police investigation,” he said.Her hostelmates found her seriously ill on the bed in the evening. She was immediately admitted to the emergency dept of the hospital, where she was declared dead. As per information, she had previously attempted suicide in Bengaluru, and had injured herself with sharp objects. She had also received treatment at Bengaluru Medical College.
