MS Dhoni has long been regarded as one of the sharpest wicketkeepers in cricket history, and a stumping from 2016 only added fuel to that reputation. The moment came during the second T20I between India and Australia at Melbourne on January 29, 2016. Chasing 184, Australia fell short by 27 runs, but one dismissal stood out.Batting at No. 7, James Faulkner attempted a cut shot against Ravindra Jadeja. The ball brushed the bat, clipped Dhoni’s pad, and ricocheted onto the stumps. Faulkner was left stranded outside his crease as Dhoni broke into instant celebration, knowing the batter was out. The batter however, was left confused and in disbelief, almost as if he couldn’t comprehend what had transpired. Replays confirmed that Dhoni had not used his gloves to complete the stumping, sparking debate on whether it was a calculated move or sheer accident. Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey, reflecting on the same in a YouTube video of him reacting to unusual keeping moments, suggested that Dhoni’s brilliance made even the improbable seem intentional. “Dhoni, he’s a genius, so he probably meant it. This probably is intentional because it’s MS Dhoni,” Carey said. Though many felt the dismissal was more luck than intent, Carey’s assessment showed the respect Dhoni commands globally for his quick thinking behind the stumps.
