NEW DELHI: Heavy monsoon rains on Tuesday flooded the campus of Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College and Cluster University in Jammu. Videos circulating on social media show students carrying their bags on their heads as they wade through knee-deep water, while classrooms and hostels remain submerged, bringing daily routines to a halt.The waterlogging has disrupted academic schedules, making access to low-lying areas nearly impossible and creating chaotic conditions for students and staff.A video from GGM College shows people leaving the campus with water above their waists, carrying their shoes in a bucket.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather warnings for the region. A yellow alert has been issued for Friday in Poonch, Reasi, Rajouri, Kishtwar, and Udhampur districts, predicting thunderstorms and lightning. An orange alert has been announced for Saturday and Sunday in Poonch, Kishtwar, Jammu, Ramban, and Udhampur, indicating the possibility of heavier rainfall.On Thursday, Jammu and Kashmir faced adverse weather conditions, with heavy rainfall and landslides severely disrupting daily life. In a significant move to ensure student safety, all Government and private schools across the Jammu Division were ordered to remain closed until Saturday, reported ANI..The decision followed alarming reports from several districts highlighting severe conditions affecting school operations. Heads of institutions were advised to consider conducting online classes, particularly for students in Classes 9 to 12, wherever suitable infrastructure and internet connectivity are available.Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah reviewed the flood situation in the region. He expressed concern over the damage caused by two days of continuous rainfall, stating that the Union Territory had narrowly escaped a major crisis.
