CHANDIGARH: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday arrested a key accused in the March 15 Thakurdwara temple grenade attack in Amritsar from Bihar.Sharanjit Kumar, alias Sunny, a resident of Bhaini Bangar village, Qadian in Gurdaspur district, was nabbed from Gaya, the NIA said.“The accused was found to be actively involved in the conspiracy and execution of the terror attack that took place in the early hours of March 15,” the NIA added. The grenade attack was carried out by two bike-borne assailants, Gursidak Singh and Vishal Gill, working under the directions of foreign-based handlers. Gursidak was killed on March 17 in an encounter with Punjab Police, which opened retaliatory fire during a pursuit to nab him.NIA investigations revealed a conspiracy by handlers with a transnational presence in Europe, US, and Canada. The handlers provided terror hardware, funds, logistical support, and target details to their on-ground operatives in India, the counter-terror agency further found.According to the NIA investigations, Gursidak and Vishal were involved in the procurement and supply of multiple consignments of grenades as well as arms and ammunition. On March 1, a consignment of four grenades was received by Sharanjit from another arrested accused at Batala, district Gurdaspur. He, in turn, handed over one grenade to Gursidak and Vishal just two days before the attack, according to the NIA.“Sharanjit absconded from Batala after the NIA searched the area a month ago. He was finally traced to Gaya after extensive investigation based on human and technical intelligence,” the NIA said.
