MEERUT: A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped repeatedly by a maulana (cleric) inside a madrassa for several months and impregnated her in Saharanpur. The matter came to light only after the girl complained of abdominal pain and her parents took her to a doctor. The 32-year-old accused has been arrested, said police.The survivor has been studying in the madrassa since April. She told her parents that the cleric sexually assaulted her inside the mosque and at his residence, and threatened to kill her if she resisted or told anyone about the matter. On Sept 26, the family mustered the courage to approach the police and file a complaint, following which a case under BNS sections 64 (2), 65 (rape), 351 (criminal intimidation), and under sections 5 and 6 of Pocso Act.Saharanpur SP (city) Vyom Bindal said an investigation was underway.“We are questioning other students to find out if a similar assault happened to others,” said Bindal. “We are probing the role of his family members in the crime. His brother is currently at large, and efforts are on to nab him,” said the SP.(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
