Nanak birth anniversary: Centre allows Sikh jathas to visit Pak; caution advised

CHANDIGARH/AMRITSAR: Centre has allowed Sikh pilgrimage groups (jathas) to visit Pakistan for Guru Nanak Dev’s birth anniversary (Parkash Purb), reversing an earlier ban imposed over security concerns.Reviewing its Sept 12 restriction, govt acknowledged the pilgrimage’s religious and cultural significance. However, MHA stressed that security threats persist and advised travellers to exercise extreme caution. In a letter to chief secretaries, MHA said the nod is for this occasion only and comes with strict conditions: all applications must be sponsored by Sikh religious organisations, vetted by intelligence agencies, and cleared lists submitted to MHA by Oct 22.Travel will be allowed only for those granted a Pakistan visa and recommended by MHA and MEA, as part of MHA-designated jathas through ICP, Attari.
