Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu clinches silver at World Weightlifting Championships

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who won silver in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, secured a silver medal in the 48kg division at the World Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Førde, Norway. She achieved a total lift of 199kg in the competition. North Korean weightlifter Ri Song-gum dominated the event by winning three gold medals in the 48kg division. Ri set new world records with a 91kg snatch, a 122kg clean and jerk, and a total lift of 213kg.Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen took the bronze medal with a total lift of 198kg. The championship continues with women’s 53kg and men’s 60kg events scheduled for the next day.Chanu, now 31, made her return to competitive weightlifting after Paris 2024 by winning gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in August. This performance in Norway adds to her impressive international record.The Indian weightlifter previously won gold in the 48kg category at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim. She also claimed silver in the 49kg category at the 2022 championships in Bogota.In the men’s division, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Lovepreet Singh is leading the Indian contingent at the World Championships. Singh recently won bronze at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.Indian weightlifters Ajith Narayana and Ajaya Babu Valluri also achieved success at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, both securing gold medals.
