The national selection committee is likely to take a call on India’s ODI captaincy in the selection meeting scheduled for later on Saturday. TOI has learnt that Rohit Sharma was not given intimation about the meeting till late last night while it is likely that Test captain Shubman Gill may be elevated to the post after the third day’s play in the first Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad. However, the selection committee will pick the team for the three-ODI series in Australia on Oct 19. It has been learnt that the selectors are not keen on dropping Rohit as yet. The selectors and the team management are of the view that they need to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup right now.

“At the moment, there are no major doubts over Rohit and Virat Kohli’s place in the ODI team. However, the selectors want a stable leadership going ahead. As it is, the number of ODIs have come down significantly. By natural progression, Gill should take charge of the ODI team,” a BCCI source told TOI. Going forward, Kohli and Rohit’s selection will be done on merit. The duo played big roles in India’s triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy in March this year.More to follow..
