JALPAIGURI: BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a two-time parliamentarian from North Malda, sustained serious injuries after being attacked by locals while visiting flood-affected areas in North Bengal. The incident occurred as he was traveling to the Nagrakata area in Jalpaiguri’s Dooars region to oversee relief and rescue operations following heavy rains and landslides.

According to eyewitnesses, stones were pelted at Murmu’s car, leaving him with severe head injuries. Visuals from the scene showed the MP bleeding profusely, with his face and clothes soaked in blood.The BJP condemned the attack, blaming the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) for targeting party leaders engaged in relief work. BJP IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya shared a video of the injured MP on X, stating: “BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a respected tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, was attacked by TMC goons while on his way to Nagrakata to help with relief and rescue efforts after devastating rains, floods, and landslides. While Mamata Banerjee dances at her Kolkata Carnival, the TMC and state administration are missing in action. Those actually helping the people, BJP leaders and karyakartas, are being attacked for doing relief work. This is TMC’s Bengal, where cruelty rules and compassion is punished.”The attack comes amid severe flooding in North Bengal, which has claimed at least 23 lives since Saturday night. Of these, 105 were rescued by boat, while another 55 were evacuated using zip lines in Jalpaiguri. Authorities continue to monitor water levels and provide assistance to stranded residents as relief operations intensify.The West Bengal government has yet to comment on the attack on Murmu. Political tensions in the state are expected to rise as parties accuse each other of negligence and violence amid the ongoing natural disaster.(With agency inputs)
