Family feud: Woman files FIR against parents for interfering in life; Gujarat HC halts police action
Gujarat High Court has provided interim relief to parents and sister against whom their daughter filed an FIR for interfering with her life and objecting to her marriage

Ahmedabad: Gujarat high court has come to the rescue of a couple whose daughter filed an FIR against them for interfering with her life by objecting to her marriage decision. The court has temporarily halted any coercive police action against them. The 42-year-old complainant, who works in corporate marketing, lodged the FIR at Gandhinagar Mahila police station against her parents and younger sister. The daughter alleged in the FIR that the parents travelled from Bhopal and caused a disturbance at her residence, protesting her decision to marry her business partner. She accused her parents of continued harassment, including phone calls labelling her as `characterless’.In her complaint, she stated that she first married in 2009 and moved to her matrimonial home in Ahmedabad. Following differences with her husband, she began living separately in 2021. Despite this, her parents pressured her to reconcile with her husband and return to her marital home. After her divorce in June 2024, she entered a relationship with her business partner. Upon informing her parents of her intention to marry him, they objected. In May, her parents and sister visited her home and allegedly abused her. “After that, my parents very often call me on the phone and harass me. Even my relatives also do bad mouthing about me. They all call me characterless, and I am fed up with this. My father sent me a notice through post informing that they have disowned me, and they published an advertisement in the newspaper as well in this regard,” the FIR reads. Her parents and sister petitioned the High Court to quash the FIR. Their counsel argued, as recorded by HC, “The lifestyle of the daughter – complainant was not approved by the parents and therefore, some heated exchange of words had taken place between them. The same was construed as abuse and intimidation by the complainant and therefore, she filed a complaint against present applicants who happen to be the parents and sister of the complainant and therefore, present applicants are required to be protected.Justice Nirzar Desai issued a notice to the police and the complainant, scheduling further hearings for November 28. The court granted interim relief to the petitioners, preventing police from taking any coercive action against them until then.
