Telangana bus fare hike: BRS working president KT Rama Rao put under house arrest; heavy police deployed
Police in Hyderabad have reportedly placed KT Rama Rao under house arrest at his residence, amid heavy security deployment, claimed party.

NEW DELHI: Hyderabad Police have placed BRS working president KT Rama Rao under house arrest, the party claimed on Thursday.Visuals outside his house showed heavy security deployment. The move comes ahead of the “Bus Bhavan” programme, where the party had planned to protest against a recent hike in RTC bus fares. Earlier this week, Rama Rao criticised the Congress-led state government for increasing bus fares, accusing chief minister A. Revanth Reddy of burdening poor and middle-class commuters. He described the latest Rs 10 per fare increase as “cruel and deeply insensitive,” noting that this was not the first fare hike under the current government. Rama Rao highlighted the broader economic impact, pointing out that rising prices of essential goods, combined with higher transport costs, could push struggling families into deeper financial hardship. “How can the poor survive when they are squeezed further by such financial pressures?” he asked, urging the government to reconsider the policy. The BRS has stated that the fare hike would add roughly Rs 500 per month per commuter, significantly affecting those who rely on public transport for daily travel. Police have not provided an official statement regarding Rama Rao’s detention.
