Shamli: A 72-year-old man allegedly poisoned his wife before consuming the toxic substance himself on Karva Chauth on Friday, police said on Saturday.Pooran Singh, a resident of Mohammadpur Badhera village in Aligarh’s Atrauli tehsil, had been suffering from tuberculosis, and often disregarded medical advice on dietary restrictions, sparking frequent arguments with his wife. On the occasion, he took his 70-year-old wife Chameli Devi to Ramghat in Bulandshahr under the pretext of bathing in the Ganga river. There he allegedly mixed a poisonous substance into their food, which they both consumed.The couple’s condition soon deteriorated and the man died on the spot. Locals alerted authorities and took the woman to a nearby hospital, where she was referred to Aligarh for treatment, however, she succumbed en route.Ramghat SHO Yang Bahadur Singh said, “The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination, and an investigation is underway. No formal complaint has been lodged in the case so far.”Sources close to the family said that Pooran, frustrated by his prolonged illness, had previously spoken about living and dying together with his wife. The couple is survived by a son who works in Ghaziabad, and a daughter, who is married in Aligarh’s Khurd Khera village.In a similar incident in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar on Friday, a man allegedly killed himself following a dispute with his wife over shopping and a beauty parlour visit on the occasion of Karva Chauth. Sugreev Prasad, 37, a native of Deoria, UP, was found hanging in his rented accommodation after his wife left the house with their two children to stay at her sister’s residence in a nearby village.
