Zubeen Garg case: Violence after supporters gather outside Assam jail, 5 accused sent to judicial custody - video

NEW DELHI: Violence broke out outside Baksa District Jail in Assam on Wednesday after five people accused in connection with singer Zubeen Garg’s death were shifted there following a court order sending them to judicial custody. The accused North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin and suspended police officer Sandipan Garg, and two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya were brought to Baksa Jail after the Chief Judicial Magistrate expressed concern for their safety and directed that they be lodged in a facility with fewer inmates. As the vehicles carrying the accused arrived at the jail, a large crowd demanding justice for the late singer gathered outside. Some among them began pelting stones at the police convoy, leading to chaotic scenes before security forces brought the situation under control. The arrests were made earlier this month in connection with Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, where he reportedly drowned. The case, which has sparked widespread outrage across Assam, is being investigated by a special investigation team (SIT) formed by the state government, with the CID also probing financial irregularities linked to Mahanta.
