China on Thursday defended its ongoing purchases of Russian oil, calling them “legitimate” and criticising what it described as “unilateral bullying” by the United States. The remarks come after US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that PM Modi had assured him New Delhi would stop buying Russian oil and signalled intentions to pressure China similarly.“The actions of the United States are a typical example of unilateral bullying and economic coercion,” said Lin Jian, spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, during a press briefing. Jian also defended its “normal, legitimate economic, trade, and energy cooperation with countries around the world, including Russia”.
Beijing warns of countermeasures
Lin Jian added that China would take firm countermeasures if its interests are harmed and vowed to “resolutely safeguard its sovereignty.”The statement underscores Beijing’s insistence that it is not a party to the Ukraine conflict, despite longstanding accusations from Kyiv and Western governments that China provides political and economic support to Moscow.
Trump intensifies pressure on India, China
Trump has repeatedly accused China and India of funding the Ukraine war through discounted Russian oil imports and has demanded that European allies immediately halt purchases. While Trump seeks to rally nations against Russian energy purchases, Beijing’s latest comments signal that it will resist external pressure, emphasising national interests and sovereignty.
