Amazon founder Jeff Bezos recently made a prediction wherein he painted an optimistic vision of humanity’s future. He said that millions of people will be living in space within two decades – by 2045 – while robots handle work commutes to the moon and other celestial bodies on human’s behalf.“I don’t see how anybody can be discouraged who is alive right now,” Bezos told the audience during an appearance at Italian Tech Week 2025 and emphasised the opportunities ahead as technology accelerates.

Bezos says robots will replace the daily commute

Bezos says that the work commute won’t just be shorter – it’ll be handled entirely by robots, because humans will be commuting to entirely different planets.“In the next kind of couple of decades, I believe there will be millions of people living in space. That’s how fast this is going to accelerate,” he predicted, adding that space colonisation won’t be driven by necessity but by choice.“They’ll mostly be living there because they want to. We don’t need people to live in space,” he added. Moreover, Bezos noted that for actual work on extraterrestrial surfaces, robots will take over the heavy lifting. “If you need to do some work on the surface of the moon or anywhere else, we will be able to send robots to do that work, and that will be much more cost-effective than sending humans,” he explained.

Bezos rejects idea that AI will kill employment

Bezos pushed back against widespread concerns that artificial intelligence (AI) and automation will devastate employment and society—fears that have intensified since ChatGPT’s explosive launch.“Civilizational abundance comes from our inventions. So 10,000 years ago, or whenever it was, somebody invented the plough, and we all got richer…. I’m talking about all of civilization, these tools increase our abundance, and that pattern will continue,” he insisted.
