Kwon was supposed to start his round at 9:30 a.m., but arrived late. While Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, allowed him to play with a penalty, fans criticized Kwon for being unprofessional. Soon after, a 2019 NBC Sports article about his college golf days at the University of Oklahoma resurfaced online, revealing that Kwon had struggled with lateness and discipline issues in the past. The story, shared by Tee Times (@TeeTimesPub), showed that Kwon almost got kicked off the Oklahoma Sooners golf team because he often missed workouts and classes.

After Kwon missed his tee time at the Internet Invitational, golf fans on social media began sharing a 2019 NBC Sports article about his college career. The story, written by NBC Sports’ Carson Williams, talked about Kwon’s early struggles after joining the Oklahoma Sooners golf program.According to the report, Kwon “often wouldn’t wake up in time for workouts, practice, or class.” His coach, Ryan Hybl, almost removed him from the team for his lack of discipline but decided to keep him because he was the “glue guy” for the Sooners.The post from @TeeTimesPub gained attention on X, with fans calling out how Kwon’s college habits seemed to show up again at the recent tournament. One user wrote, “He’s a Sooner. Makes total sense now,” while another joked, “Ironically, he was a… sooner.”

After the backlash, Luke Kwon posted a message on his Instagram Stories, saying it was an honest mistake. He wrote:“Just woke up what’d I miss. Obviously, nobody sleeps through their alarm wanting to sleep through their alarm. S*** happened and I am genuinely sorry, honest mistake. I’ve already apologized to Portnoy, Bob and the boys off camera at the event.
