Powerful earthquake in Russia: 5.8 magnitude quake jolts Kamchatka region; tremors felt in East Coast

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka region on Monday, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake occurred at a depth of 24 kilometers (14.91 miles), the agency reported, as cited by Reuters. No injuries have been reported as of yet. The Kamchatka Peninsula lies along the volatile Ring of Fire, a vast tectonic zone encircling much of the Pacific Ocean. The region is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as several major tectonic plates continuously collide and shift beneath it.This is a developing story.
