Congress: As in NYC, India too will rise under a young progressive neta

NEW DELHI: Hailing Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani‘s win in the New York City mayoral elections, Congress leader Pawan Khera on Wednesday said the victory “rekindles hope that the tide is turning — that soon, India too will rise under a young, educated, progressive, and democratic leader who unites rather than divides”.In a post on X, Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh highlighted that Mamdani had quoted from Jawaharlal Nehru‘s “immortal Tryst with Destiny speech” in his acceptance speech. “Actually these very words of Nehru had also been used by Alex Salmond in his campaign for the independence of Scotland in Nov 2013,” Ramesh added.Khera, who is Congress’s media and publicity department chairman, congratulated Mamdani on a campaign “rooted in mohabbat, optimism, and empathy – and on becoming the first Indian-origin Mayor of New York City”.“And the fact that Zohran understands and cherishes Pandit Nehru’s vision makes it even sweeter….” he added.Left leaders too congratulated Mamdani on his victory, with CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby saying the progressive and democratic forces from the Global South stand with Mamdani. “This victory in Trump’s America shows the acceptance for policies that prioritise people’s welfare,” he said.CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya described Mamdani’s victory as a most emphatic defeat for United States President Donald Trump and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. The Communist Party of India (CPI) said Mamdani’s win represents a powerful message of hope, justice and unity.
