‘People were yelping for help’: Survivor recounts Chhattisgarh train collision; coaches piled up in fiery crash

BILASPUR: At least 11 people were killed and several others injured after a passenger train collided from behind with a stationary goods train near Bilaspur station in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, leaving passengers in a state of shock. A survivor, who was travelling from Akaltara town in Janjgir-Champa district, described the terrifying moments during the crash.“Before I could understand what happened, people started screaming and shouting for help,” she recalled. Her coach had climbed onto a wagon of the cargo train due to the force of the impact. She said her leg got trapped under the seat, and she was rescued by responders and first taken to the railway hospital before being referred to another medical facility. The woman added that her leg suffered a fracture in the accident.The collision occurred around 4 pm when the MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit) passenger train was heading to Bilaspur from Gevra in neighbouring Korba district. Officials said the impact was so severe that one of the passenger coaches ended up on top of a wagon of the goods train. The accident happened between Gatora and Bilaspur stations on the Howrah-Mumbai rail route, just a few kilometres from Bilaspur city, which houses the South East Central Railway (SECR) zone headquarters.Railway authorities announced ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased, Rs 5 lakh to the seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for those with minor injuries.A detailed inquiry into the incident will be conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to determine the cause and recommend corrective measures.Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the accident, assuring full support to the affected families. The CM spoke to the Bilaspur District Collector, instructing officials to provide immediate medical aid to the injured and extend all possible assistance.Posting on X, Sai said railway and district administration teams were engaged in relief and rescue operations, with all necessary medical facilities and resources being mobilised.
