Democratic leader Zohran Mamdani made history as New York’s first Muslim mayor, and wasted no time setting the tone for his leadership. Delivering a fiery victory speech, Mamdani balanced promises of reform with direct challenges to US President Donald Trump, declaring that New York would once again lead the nation in standing up to hate and inequality.“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!” Mamdani proclaimed to roaring cheers. He vowed to hold “bad landlords” accountable and announced his plan for a citywide rent freeze, adding, “The Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants. We will end the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks.

Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, also centred his speech on labour rights and economic justice. “We will stand alongside unions and expand labour protections,” he said. “Because we know, just as Donald Trump does, that when working people have ironclad rights, the bosses who seek to extort them become very small indeed.”Taking a direct jab at Trump’s hardline immigration policies, Mamdani declared New York to be “a city of immigrants, built by immigrants, powered by immigrants — and now, led by an immigrant.” He continued, “So hear me, President Trump: to get to any of us, you have to get through all of us.”Closing on a personal note, Mamdani reflected on his unconventional rise to power and what it symbolised for New York’s future. “The conventional wisdom will tell you I am far from the perfect candidate,” he said. “I am young. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this. But tonight proves that convention has held us back — and the promise of the future will no longer be a relic of the past.As the crowd erupted in applause, Mamdani ended his speech with a reminder to the New Yorkers: “This city belongs to you.”
