BENGALURU: Authorities in Bengaluru have launched an investigation after videos surfaced showing convicted serial rapist Umesh Reddy, gold smuggling case accused Tarun Raju and other inmates using mobile phones and enjoying other privileges inside Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. The videos, which have sparked public outrage, appear to show Reddy — convicted in a string of sexual assaults and murders between 1996 and 2022 — using multiple mobile phones in his barracks. A television set is also visible in the footage. Reddy, a former police constable, was convicted of 20 rapes and 18 murders. His death sentence was commuted by the Supreme Court in 2022 to 30 years of imprisonment without remission, after the court took note of claims related to his mental health, though medical reports had found him fit. Another video purportedly shows Tarun Raju, an accused in the Ranya Rao gold smuggling case, using a mobile phone and even cooking food within the prison premises. The Karnataka Prison Department has confirmed that an inquiry is underway to determine how the inmates gained access to the prohibited devices and whether any prison officials were involved in the breach.
