AGRA: A “clerical error” led to a scooter owner from Muzaffarnagar receiving a traffic fine of Rs 20.74 lakh for multiple violations, including riding without a helmet, licence, or vehicle documents. The fine was issued by a sub-inspector at the Gandhi Colony police post under Nai Mandi police station limits to local resident Anmol Sangal.After the staggering amount sparked outrage on social media, police conducted an internal inquiry and admitted the fine resulted from a “clerical error”. SP (Traffic) Atul Choubey said on Saturday, “The vehicle was seized on on Nov 4 under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and the sub-inspector entered the section number in the fine amount field, inflating the figure to Rs 2,074,000 instead of Rs 4,000.” He added that the correct fine amount of Rs 4,000 has now been imposed on Sangal.Sangal’s father, Sanjeev Kumar, said, “It was shocking for us to receive such a large fine just because my son didn’t have a helmet and the vehicle papers with him. The police later clarified it was a clerical mistake and sent us a Rs 4,000 challan, which we are yet to pay.” He added that the seized vehicle has not yet been released.
