TARAKESHWAR (HOOGHLY): A severely bleeding four-year-old child was found near a drain close to Tarakeshwar railway station, near Kolkata early on Saturday, sparking tension in the area.The child, who lived with her grandparents, was reportedly sleeping when the attacker cut the mosquito net and abducted her. She was later recovered just a few hundred meters away from the station, with multiple injuries.
The child’s grandfather has now been arrested in connection with the case.The child was first taken to Tarakeshwar Rural Hospital, where she was treated and discharged. The family later insisted to the police that the child had been raped. This prompted authorities to restart the investigation and admit the child for a medico-legal examination.The BJP staged strong protests at the Tarakeshwar police station, alleging delayed action by authorities despite “visible marks of injuries in her private parts” when she was first taken to the hospital. The Hooghly (Rural) police said it will update on the case investigation at 4 pm on Sunday.The investigation has also raised questions. The family alleges that the child went missing at 4 am on Saturday and was found at 11 am. They claim the incident was reported to the police immediately, but their concerns were initially dismissed. Only after protests did the police reportedly begin a formal probe. The Hooghly police has not responded to these allegations.
