Death at dawn: 23-year-old dies as car rams parked truck in Ahmedabad; 2 women injured

AHMEDABAD: SG Road’s 5am calm crumpled violently on Saturday as a man driving his car at speed failed to notice a stationary truck, leading to a collision which killed him just below morning walkers’ path. The impact was catastrophic, causing extensive damage to both vehicles. The driver has been identified as Aryan Batra, 23. Two women were also seriously injured in the crash, which occurred near Thaltej, an exercise spot particularly favoured by senior citizens. One of the women is still unconscious and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Police said skid marks of the car tyres stretch to about 25 metres, indicating that the driver spotted the truck too late and applied the brakes suddenly to avoid the collision. “The two women, both 21 years old, are residents of Mithakali,” said U B Dhakhada, the police inspector in charge who is investigating the case. The women stay at a paying guest facility, police sources said. SG Highway Traffic-2 police have registered a case against Batra under various BNS sections, including those related to causing death by negligence and rash driving that endangers human life. Dhakhada said that Batra’s car hit the truck’s rear. The truck had developed a snag and was lying unattended since midnight. DCP (traffic west) Bhavna Patel said that police are investigating the direction of travel of the three people involved in the accident. Patel said, “The women have not recorded their statements yet as they are in shock.” A police source said Batra failed to veer away from the truck and applied the brakes, which led to the collision. Police are also investigating whether the three had attended a party. According to the complaint filed by the truck owner, Sadhuram Kargwal, his truck had broken down on the highway. “The truck driver, Rafikmiya Sindhi, had taken necessary precautions by placing branches behind the vehicle and tying a red cloth to the branches,” Kargwal said. “He had also turned on the parking lights to alert commuters.” The complaint said, “Despite the measures taken by Sindhi, the car driven by Batra reportedly approached at high speed and collided with the left rear side of the truck.” Batra sustained critical injuries to his head and was taken to Sola Civil Hospital, where he was declared dead at 5.40am.
