Woman tries to kill daughter & self, kin link it to Bengal SIR

SERAMPORE: A 27-year-old homemaker in Bengal’s Hooghly district consumed pesticide along with her six-year-old daughter in a suspected suicide attempt amid claims she did so as she was not given SIR forms and feared being struck off electoral rolls. Asha Soren was married eight years ago but had been staying with her parents in Kananadi village for over five years following marital discord. She fed her daughter the pesticide on Friday and had it herself in a fit of despair after other family members received SIR forms recently but she allegedly did not get one. Asha’s family claimed she panicked as she suspected her SIR form would be issued only at the house of her estranged in-laws in Haripal, around 20km away in the same district. Her in-laws allegedly offered no help with documents. Asha and her daughter were rushed to a nearby hospital and later taken to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital, where doctors described their condition as “serious but stable”. Asima Patra, Dhaniakhali’s TMC MLA, met the family Saturday. “I informed (TMC general secretary and MP) Abhishek Banerjee. He arranged for Asha to be admitted to SSKM Hospital,” Patra said.
