Gas geyser on, 12yo girl diesfrom fumes a day after b’day

AGRA: A Class 6 student from Aligarh fell unconscious in her bathroom and later died after she had purportedly switched on a gas geyser and inhaled toxic fumes on Sunday. Postmortem findings on Monday stated Manvi Singh, who had celebrated her 12th birthday on Saturday, “died of asphyxiation after inhaling carbon monoxide, emitted from the gas geyser and accumulated in the closed bathroom.Aligarh DSP Abhay Kumar Pandey told TOI: “Locals informed us about the incident and an on-spot analysis indicated that toxic fumes from the geyser were the possible reason behind the child’s death. The family did not want any police action. The child has been cremated.”A police officer, privy to the details, added that “no foul play is suspected for now, and the body was handed over to the family after postmortem.”The incident took place at Shivaji Nagar colony in Aligarh’s Quarsi area. According to her kin, Manvi had gone to take a bath around noon and when she did not come out, her mother with the help of carpenters, working next door, broke open and found the child lying unconscious on the floor. She was taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.Satyaveer Sharma, a neighbour, said the 12-year-old’s father is an Army jawan posted in Jaisalmer. Her father was in Rajasthan and he arrived after hearing the news. “We’re shattered… She celebrated her birthday with friends and family, just the other day. The girl was so cheerful that day… She had no prior health issues as far as we know,” a relative said. Aligarh chief medical officer, Dr Neeraj Tyagi, said, “Inhalation of carbon monoxide leaking from bathroom geysers can result in fatality, especially if there is no ventilation. The situation results in a sudden decline in oxygen level in the body, making the person lose his or her consciousness and even dying of suffocation — which supposedly happened in this case…. Since carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas, people fail to detect its presence.”Notably, a gas geyser is usually connected to an LPG cylinder. In such geysers, water burning of LPG releases carbon monoxide and other toxic fumes.
