Vasant Vihar ‘suicide’ victim kept away from events: Mom

NEW DELHI: The FIR filed in connection with the alleged suicide of an industrialist’s daughter-in-law in Vasant Vihar, southwest Delhi, states that “she had been isolated from social events and subjected to prolonged mental and physical abuse. Her mother has demanded a CBI probe into the case, the FIR stated. The complaint detailed an incident in Feb–March 2011, when “her son-in-law and his mother allegedly dragged her from the first floor of their home and together began to physically assault her while she was pregnant.” When the victim informed her mother, the family reportedly visited her marital home in Delhi. “The family members apologised, and assured that such behaviour would not occur again,” the FIR stated. The matter was apparently resolved between the two families, and the daughter later gave birth to a son. About a month later, she discovered her husband was having an extramarital affair, prompting her parents to take her and their grandson to their home in Howrah, the FIR stated. “My son-in-law’s family came to our house one year later, saying that he had made a grave mistake and that these matters should not be spoken of in society. They assured us that they would take care of my daughter and her son,” her mother said in FIR. The daughter was then sent back to her marital home, with a written assurance from her husband that he would not engage in violence against her. The FIR stated that for the next two to three years, the situation was reportedly stable. However, the abuse allegedly resumed, with her husband and mother-in-law mistreating her. She was said to have been defamed in society, excluded from social events and often left alone at home. The complaint also highlighted that her husband reportedly kept multiple locks on his mobile and never allowed her to use it. In April 2024, after he returned from Dubai, she reportedly accessed his phone and found obscene content, leading to a confrontation, it stated. On Nov 25, the complainant said her daughter called at 7.30 am, mentioning a fight with her husband over her son’s mobile phone. The mother calmed her down. Later, when she tried calling her daughter at 11.30 am, her calls went unanswered. The mother contacted her mother-in-law, who claimed she was at the airport and unaware of the situation. Her son-in-law reportedly said he was returning from the gym. Around noon, she received a call that her daughter was in the hospital and had passed away. When TOI contacted the family lawyer, there was no response.
