PUNE: A 30-year-old parking attendant, working with a prominent bar and restaurant in Kalyaninagar, died after he was struck by a car driven by a drunk IT firm employee around 3pm on Sunday.Police have arrested the techie, Pratapsinh Dhaygude (50), a resident of Dhanori and employed at an IT firm in Yerawada. Police said he was allegedly already drunk when he turned up at the restaurant. “We detained him on the spot and immediately referred him to a medical test at Sassoon hospital, which confirmed he drove the car under the influence of alcohol,” said senior inspector Anjum Bagwan of Yerawada police.Bagwan added that when Dhaygude was asked where he had consumed liquor before going to the Kalyaninagar restaurant, he kept repeating, “I’m a good man, not a bad man”.“When staff saw the state Dhaygude was in, they refused to serve him liquor. He then walked out in a huff, put his car in reverse, attempted to take a right turn, but lost control, ramming into the victim and then into a wall,” Bagwan said, adding that the car — a VW Jetta — has been impounded. The deceased parking attendant has been identified as Satyendar Mandal, a resident of Wadgaon Sheri in Pune and originally from Bihar. The restaurant released a statement later on Sunday condoling Mandal’s death. “We are extremely sad to report that there was an accident outside our restaurant this afternoon around 3 PM, resulting in the loss of life of one of our colleagues, Satyendar Mandal. A driver rammed his car into Satyendar Mandal, who worked as a valet attendant. An FIR has been registered with the Yerawada Police Station, and the authorities are investigating the incident. We are extending our complete cooperation with the police to help bring justice to the victim. “Sunday’s accident spot is just 100m from the location where on May 19, 2024, a drunk teenager (17) rammed his Porsche into two motorcycle-borne techies, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, causing their deaths.
