Winter session: MP makes a statement with a stray, sets off a dogfight
‘Those sitting inside Parliament bite, dogs don’t,’ said Cong MP Renuka Chowdhury; BJP MP Jagdambika Pal accused Chowdhury of ‘tamasha’

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury triggered a lot of curiosity and also drew charge of indulging in “tamasha” after she arrived at Parliament complex with a rescued stray dog in her car. “Those sitting inside Parliament bite, dogs don’t,” she said, adding that she rescued the stray earlier in the day and was taking it to a veterinarian. She claimed govt did not like animals, rejected objections from some NDA MPs saying there was no law against rescuing a stray dog.“This govt does not like animals. Animals don’t have a voice. It is so small, does it look like it will bite? Those sitting inside Parliament bite, not dogs,” she told reporters. A self-confessed dog lover, she has a few pets at home. Not to let her swipe go unanswered, Union minister Ramdas Athawale, a BJP ally, said she was right in saying that people inside Parliament bite – it is the opposition members who bite and create disorder. Then he delivered his typical poetic riposte. “You keep bringing ‘kutta’ (dog) here and we will continue to get ‘satta’ (power),” he said. Athawale said, adding that her comments were not in good taste. She should not have brought dog to Parliament complex.BJP MP Jagdambika Pal accused Chowdhury of indulging in “tamasha” (theatrics) and violating protocol by bringing a dog to Parliament. He argued that MPs could not bring anyone inside the Parliament without proper documents, and demanded action against Chowdhury.
