KANPUR: A newlywed woman in Kanpur was expelled from her husband’s house just a day after their wedding following dowry demands, police said. Lubna, who married Mohammad Imran on November 29, returned to her parental home distressed after her in-laws allegedly demanded a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle or Rs 2 lakh.Police said Lubna went to her in-laws’ home in the Juhi area of Kanpur expecting to begin her married life, but her hopes were dashed when the family issued the demand.

They “told her to either bring the Bullet motorcycle or Rs 2 lakh”, forcibly took her jewellery and the cash gifted by her family, and then threw her out of the house, her mother Mehtab said.Mehtab added, “Not only did they throw my daughter out of the house, but they also physically assaulted her.”The bride’s family said they had already spent several lakhs on the wedding and provided numerous gifts, including a sofa set, television, washing machine, dressing table, water cooler, dinner sets, clothes and kitchenware made of steel and brass. Mehtab said that had the in-laws demanded the motorcycle before the wedding, they might have reconsidered the marriage.Juhi police have filed a case against Mohammad Imran and his family under the Dowry Prohibition Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. An investigation is underway.DCP South Deependra Nath Chaudhary said, “Further action will be taken based on the evidence.”
