Driving on highways? Jio will now send safety warnings to your phone: Details

Reliance Jio users travelling on India’s highways will soon start receiving real-time safety alerts on their phones, thanks to a new partnership between the telecom operator and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Both sides have signed an MoU to roll out a telecom-based warning system aimed at improving road safety for millions of 4G and 5G users.Under this initiative, travellers approaching hazardous spots on National Highways such as accident-prone stretches, fog-heavy sections, cattle-crossing zones, or sudden diversions, will get alerts directly on their phones. These warnings will be delivered through SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority voice calls, ensuring they reach users even in areas with patchy data connectivity. The system will be integrated in phases with NHAI’s digital platforms, including the Rajmargyatra app and the 1033 emergency helpline. According to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, the setup does not require new roadside hardware. Instead, it will rely on Jio’s existing network of telecom towers to quickly scale across the highway network.

The alerts will be fully automated and sent to all Jio users travelling on or near affected highway sections. With Jio’s subscriber base crossing 500 million, officials say the reach of this initiative will significantly enhance safety awareness for long-distance commuters.A pilot rollout will begin under select NHAI regional offices to fine-tune alert thresholds and identify risk zones. NHAI has also confirmed that similar collaborations will be explored with other telecom providers, enabling broader coverage in the future, reported ANI.Stay tuned to TOI Auto for latest updates on the automotive sector and do follow us on our social media handles on Facebook, Instagram and X.
