Cross-dressing crook: Burglar dressed as woman arrested in Delhi; how 14-day chase busted Mohan Garden heist

NEW DELHI: Disguised as a woman to evade detection in CCTV cameras, a 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly breaking into a house in southwest Delhi’s Mohan Garden and fleeing with jewellery, watches and a handicam along with an associate. The incident came to light on Nov 16, when a complaint was received from a resident of Mohan Garden alleging overnight house theft while he was away for the night. A case had been registered under the charges of theft in a dwelling house of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Mohan Garden police station.“The team analysed CCTV footage near the house and spotted a masked man along with a masked lady entering and exiting,” said DCP (Dwarka) Ankit Singh, adding that further tracking their trail for 14 days revealed that the masked lady in the footage was in fact a man.Based on their face in the footage, one of the burglars was identified through local informers as one Saurabh Kumar. Manual and technical surveillance revealed that he was active in the Dabri area and his multiple hideouts were identified and raided across Mohan Garden and Ranhola. The police had received a tip-off that he would be coming to Ambedkar Park in Uttam Nagar around 6.30pm. A trap was laid and he was nabbed after a brief chase.Police found that his first arrest was for a burglary in Mohan Garden in 2022. He had later been arrested again in an Arms Act and house theft case at Ranhola police station and had recently been released from jail. “He has identified his associate as one Sumit and confessed to committing other crimes with him across Dabri and Uttam Nagar,” said a senior police officer. He has a total of three previous involvements and his arrest has led to 10 cases of theft and snatching being worked out across various areas of Dwarka.Police have recovered a pair of silver anklets, a handicam and five stolen mobile phones from his possession.
