Mamdani announces he would move to 11,000-sq-ft mayor's residence Gracie Mansion with wife because of 'safety' reasons

New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced Monday he would move to the official residence of NYC mayor Gracie Mansion with his wife Rama, after he is sworn into office in January. “This decision came down to our family’s safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for,” he wrote in his statement, in which he fondly remembers his days in Astoria, where he has been living in a $2,300 one-bedroom apartment. Earlier, he didn’t confirm that he would move into the mayor’s official residence but said he would definitely not stay in his small apartment. “We will miss much about our home in Astoria. Cooking dinner side by side in our kitchen, sharing a sleepy elevator ride with our neighbors in the evening, hearing music and laughter vibrate through the walls of the apartment,” the statement added. Mamdani will be inaugurated on January 1, 2026, succeeding Mayor Eric Adams.
