People felt ‘total fear’ as soldiers tried to overthrow president


Gunfire and explosions were heard in Benin’s main city, Cotonou, as a group of soldiers attempted to overthrow the government.

President Patrice Talon has since appeared on television to reassure citizens that the situation was “totally under control”.

But residents were left shocked by what had happened.
