Officials visit Farakka Barrage ahead of Bangladesh deal expiring

NEW DELHI: In the backdrop of talks between India and Bangladesh to renew Ganga Water Sharing Treaty, a team of senior officials from Union Jal Shakti ministry visited Farakka Barrage Project in West Bengal and reviewed its technical and administrative aspects .Farakka Barrage, located in Murshidabad and Malda districts, is key to the 30-year-old water sharing treaty, wh-ich will expire in Dec. It is expected that the fresh negotiation will speed up once a new govt comes to office in Dhaka after the Feb 12 elections.The team of officials, led by Union water resources secretary V L Kantha Rao, reviewed overall progress of work under Farakka Barrage Project. “The secretary emphasised the need for timely completion of ongoing wor-ks, advised pro-active resolution of bottlenecks, and stre-ssed ensuring time-bound progress on priority works related to the operation, maintenance, and modernisation of Farakka Barrage,” said an official statement.
