Clash in Odisha town injures 12; schools shut

Rourkela: Tension erupted in a market in Odisha’s Sundargarh town on Thursday following a clash between two communities.In the ensuing stone pelting, at least 12 people, including a policeman, were injured. The administration has imposed prohibitory orders across Sundargarh. Internet services were suspended for 24 hours, starting 6pm.Schools and colleges were declared closed on Friday. Around 11am, rumours started circulating that members of a community were involved in some wrongdoing. An agitated group vandalised a shop, set a pickup van on fire, and damaged a car and a scooter. As tempers flared, a violent clash broke out, with both sides pelting stones and, in some instances, allegedly attacking each other with swords.All injured persons, including the cop, were hospitalised. “We are at the spot and monitoring the situation,” ADM Abhimanyu Majhi said.
