After engine fire, Turkish flight diverts safely to Kolkata

NEW DELHI: A Turkish Airlines Airbus A330 (TC-LNH) with about 250 people on board operating from Kathmandu to Istanbul as TK 727 on Wednesday made an emergency landing at Kolkata after an engine fire. The pilots of this flight declared PAN PAN — international urgency signal for a serious situation needing prompt help but not an immediate life-threatening emergency, unlike a Mayday call — at 1.38 pm (IST) due to “right engine on fire” and requested to divert to Kolkata. “TK 727 reported fire under control at 13.51 pm and proceeding to Kolkata with one engine failure,” India’s aviation ministry said in a statement. Flight tracking sites show the aircraft landed at 2.48 pm.
