Dog on road, delay in care: Rider ‘booked’ for own death in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: A chain of events, beginning with an accident after a stray dog darts across the road and followed by alleged gaps in treatment at two hospitals, has ended with a man being booked for his own death, exposing what the family calls sheer systemic apathy. The case relates to Hitesh Mistri, a 32-year-old resident of Pij village in Vaso taluka, who died during treatment at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on Jan 30. His younger brother, Ravi, filed a complaint at Vaso police station, seeking a legal probe into the circumstances that led to his death.

According to the complaint, the accident occurred on the evening of Jan 26 when Mistri was riding his motorcycle from Nadiad to Pij village. Near Tundel village, close to Shreeji Villa Society, a stray dog darted across the road, causing the motorcycle to skid off the road. Mistri suffered injuries to his left leg and other parts of the body.He was first taken to a private hospital in Nadiad, then transferred to a CT scan centre, after which he was readmitted to the same hospital. A surgery was performed on his left leg on Jan 29. However, soon after the procedure, his condition reportedly worsened, and he developed breathing difficulties. The complaint states that a ventilator was not immediately available, causing his health to deteriorate further.Doctors later referred him to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. The family shifted him there in the early hours of Jan 30, but he could not be saved. Mistri died around 11am the same day. What has added to the family’s anguish is the legal outcome of the accident. Since the accident involves only the victim’s motorcycle — and no collision with any other vehicle — he has been shown as accused of causing his own death by negligent driving under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. Vaso police said a case has been registered based on the complaint and further inquiry is underway to ascertain the sequence of events, including treatment records from the hospitals.
