Student at Leicester’s De Montfort University stabbed to death

LONDON: A student studying at De Montfort University in Leicester was stabbed to death outside the university campus on Tuesday.Whilst there are a large number of Indian students studying at the university, the victim is not believed to be Indian origin.Leicestershire police said that a murder investigation had been launched after a man in his 20s was stabbed in Oxford Street, which is right outside the university campus. Police were called just after 5pm to reports of a man collapsed in Oxford Street. It is believed he had been involved in an altercation with another man in the street, who then left the scene. Various bystanders tried to help the victim, with one giving him CPR, before emergency services arrived.An ambulance took the man to Leicester Royal Infirmary but he died a short time later. An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody. Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, senior investigating officer, said: “We know a lot of people came to the aid of the victim before emergency services arrived and we want to thank them for their help.”Katie Normington, vice-chancellor of De Montfort University, said: “We are devastated to confirm the tragic death of one of our students. Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by what has happened. We are offering direct support to students, staff and the family of the victim. We are working with Leicestershire police as they investigate this major incident.”Multiple streets remained closed on Wednesday, cordoned off by police as forensic specialists examined the scene. In Jan armed police, drones and a dog unit were sent to a student accommodation block in Bath Lane, Leicester, following reports of men with bladed weapons. Several arrests had been made at the time.
