South Mumbai horror: Mentally-ill girl impregnated after repeated rape, 16 rounded up for DNA test; culprit turns out to be her father

MUMBAI: Mumbai police have arrested the father of a 20-year-old woman with mental illness after DNA tests confirmed that he impregnated her, officials said. The case came to light in 2025 when hospital staff discovered that the non-verbal woman was five months pregnant during a medical examination. She had been admitted to the city’s Cama & Albless Hospital after complaining of abdominal discomfort to her grandmother in September. Hospital authorities immediately informed the police, triggering an investigation into the pregnancy. During the probe, DNA and blood samples were collected from around 16 men, including the woman’s father, and compared with genetic material from the foetus. A forensic report received on January 27 showed only one positive match — her father. Police said the woman disclosed during counselling that she had been assaulted by multiple people in the past, but later identified her father’s involvement as well. Based on information provided earlier, officers had initially arrested two others — a man and a minor — as part of the investigation. According to police, the sexual assault is believed to have taken place between March and September 21 last year. A case was registered the following day after the forensic findings confirmed the accused’s identity. The investigation is ongoing.
