AI models & campus labs: India's tech push at summit

NEW DELHI: India will launch its first set of sovereign AI models, announce major national AI research programmes, expand shared computing facilities, and roll out AI labs across 500 universities at AI Impact Summit 2026.Earlier, electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said home-grown models are ready for public use and will be unveiled at the summit. Trained on Indian datasets, the models are designed to handle the country’s linguistic diversity and sector-specific challenges, ranging from governance and healthcare to science and industry.A key focus of the push is talent creation. Vaishnaw said industry-led AI labs, along with GPUs, models and standardised curriculum, will be introduced in 500 universities to build a large national talent pipeline. Students will get hands-on access to AI infrastructure and real-world use cases, helping bridge the gap between education and industry needs. The fourth AI Impact Summit will be the largest edition so far and the first to be hosted in the Global South. It is expected to see participation from over 100 countries, and of more than 100 global AI leaders at CEO and CXO level and over 500 experts. The summit aims at delivering at least 10 actionable outcomes, backed by over 500 pre-events held in India and abroad.Highlighting India’s focus on industry-driven AI deployment, Vaishnaw said Indian IT firms have already built over 200 sector-focused AI models aimed at improving productivity and efficiency. On infrastructure, he said nearly $70 billion has already flowed into AI-related investments, with the figure expected to rise further. He also underlined India’s energy readiness, noting that almost half of the country’s power capacity now comes from green sources. With sovereign models, campus labs and clear roadmaps on safe and trusted AI, the summit marks India’s strongest push yet to turn AI ambition into real-world impact.
