Apple has launched the iPhone 17e, bringing MagSafe support, the new A19 chip, and a 48MP Fusion camera to its most affordable iPhone in the 17 series. In India, the iPhone 17e is priced at Rs 64,900, which is Rs 5,000 higher than last year’s starting price. However, the iPhone 17e now starts with 256GB of storage—double the base storage offered previously. Pre-orders open on March 4, and the phone goes on sale from March 11. It comes in three colour options: black, white, and a new soft pink finish.
MagSafe, A19 chip, and double storage lead the upgrades
One of the biggest changes is the addition of MagSafe with Qi2 wireless charging support at up to 15W—double the 7.5W wireless charging on the iPhone 16e. Fast wired charging via USB-C is also supported, with Apple claiming up to 50 percent charge in around 30 minutes using a 20W or higher adapter.
Powering the iPhone 17e is Apple’s current-gen A19 chip, built on 3nm architecture. Apple says it delivers up to twice the CPU performance compared to the iPhone 11, along with improved power efficiency. The new C1X modem is claimed to be up to 2x faster than the earlier C1 and more energy efficient, contributing to an all-day battery life rated at up to 26 hours of video playback.Satellite features such as Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, and Messages via satellite also remain part of the package. The Find My app now lets users share their location via satellite as well, which can come in handy when travelling off the grid.Worth reiterating—storage has been doubled this time around, up from 128GB on the iPhone 16e to 256GB as the new base. A 512GB option is also available, and that’ll set you back another Rs 20,000—at Rs 84,999.
iPhone 17e continues to sport a familiar design and screen
The design stays largely unchanged from its predecessor, with an aerospace-grade aluminium frame and IP68 dust and water resistance rating. The iPhone 17e retains a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with up to 1200 nits peak HDR brightness, now protected by Ceramic Shield 2 for improved scratch resistance and reduced glare. However, the 60Hz refresh rate carries over—no ProMotion here.
48MP Fusion camera now on the ‘e’ model
The 48MP Fusion camera system enables high-resolution shots and an optical-quality 2x telephoto—essentially two cameras in one. Users can shoot at the full 48MP resolution or use the 24MP default for a good balance of detail and file size. Portrait mode also gets an upgrade with next-generation depth capture that works automatically on people, dogs, and cats, letting you add background blur after the shot. Video recording goes up to 4K Dolby Vision at 60fps, with Spatial Audio and wind noise reduction also on board.
