Hockey player stabbed to death in Chandigarh over property dispute

CHANDIGARH: A 21-year-old state-level hockey player was stabbed to death allegedly by her relatives over a long-standing property dispute in Sector 38 on Thursday. The victim was identified as Taniya, a resident of the same sector.In his complaint to police, Taniya’s father Ravi said his sister lived on the first floor of their house with her family, and both households had been locked in a prolonged dispute over the property. Ravi alleged that his nephew Krishna frequently quarrelled with him over possession of the house.On Thursday afternoon, another argument broke out. Ravi said he went upstairs to speak to his sister’s family, and while returning, encountered Taniya on the staircase. At that moment, Krishna, along with Ravi, Gangan, Aniket, Naveen and Teena, allegedly attacked her. During the scuffle, Krishna reportedly stabbed Taniya near her waist with a knife.Critically injured, Taniya was rushed to GMSH-16, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The body has been sent for postmortem.Police from Sector 39 reached the spot soon after receiving information and registered a murder case based on Ravi’s complaint. Raids are underway to arrest the accused.Ravi said Taniya was scheduled to participate in a state-level match on Friday. Her body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy.
