SC nixes PETA plea on bull races in Karnataka

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea filed by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) against the Karnataka high court order which had held that Kambala and bull races in Karnataka cannot be restricted to the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. The appellant sought to challenge this.A bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta refused to interfere with the HC order and raised questions over why the bull races should be confined to certain areas. “They want to showcase the culture in different parts of the state; what is wrong? Let people in other parts of the state be also familiarised with the culture. Why restrict it to a particular area only?” it said.It was contended that the other places had no traditional or cultural association with the sport, and the events were being organised solely for commercial reasons, however the plea was rejected.
