VIJAYAWADA: A heartbreaking incident came to light at Martur in Bapatla district after a software engineer and her mother died following an alleged suicide attempt triggered by the sudden cancellation of a marriage proposal.According to family members, Sirikonda Srinivasa Rao and his wife Sujatha (46), residents of BC Colony, had two children — a son and a daughter, Divya (25). While their son is currently working in the United States, Divya was employed in a software company in Hyderabad for the past three years.The family recently arranged Divya’s marriage with a software engineer from Martur. The engagement ceremony was held on Dec 14 last year, and preparations were underway for the wedding, which was scheduled during summer.However, the situation took a dramatic turn on March 4, when the groom, identified as Seshu Babu, reportedly called Divya and her parents to his residence in Martur for a discussion. During the meeting, he allegedly showed them photos and videos claiming that he secretly followed Divya in Hyderabad and recorded her movements. Based on this, he reportedly informed the family that he was unwilling to proceed with the marriage.The unexpected rejection deeply upset Divya and her mother. According to relatives, the two allegedly purchased rat poison and herbicide at Martur and later went to Dronadula village, where they consumed the substances.On the evening of March 5, Srinivasa Rao reportedly found them unconscious and rushed them to a hospital at Chilakaluripet. They were later shifted to separate private hospitals in Guntur for advanced treatment. Despite the doctors’ efforts, their condition remained critical and both were declared dead on Thursday. Based on a complaint filed by Srinivasa Rao, police registered a case. The information was forwarded to Martur police, who have started an investigation into the incident.
