After laying off 4,000 calling it 'hard, clear action', Jack Dorsey's Block rehires some after calling their layoff ...

Jack Dorsey has reportedly rehired at least 4 Block employees who were laid off last month. This comes after the US-based fintech company let go of 4,000 employees, a move Twitter founder Dorsey had described as a “hard, clear action.” According to a Business Insider report, the rehired staff spans roles in engineering and recruiting. The report notes that some returned weeks after the February layoffs, as per posts from affected workers on the professional networking site LinkedIn, while others may have rejoined this month. While the numbers remain limited and there is no indication of broader rehiring, the move reflects Dorsey’s earlier acknowledgement of potential missteps, where he said, “I accept that we may have gotten some of them wrong, and we’ve built in flexibility to account for that, and do the right thing for our customers.”

What laid-off Block workers shared on LinkedIn about being rehired

Block employees who were affected by the layoffs described their return to the company on LinkedIn, pointing to individual cases rather than a broader rehiring effort. Andrew Harvard, a design engineer, said his layoff was due to a “clerical error” and that the company reached out shortly after.“They offered me the opportunity to return, and I’ve accepted,” Harvard wrote.Matt Morris, a recruiter, described the period after his layoff as a “whirlwind” in a since-deleted post. He said his manager pushed for his return “all the way to the CEO,” after which Block decided to bring him back. Creative strategy lead Chane Rennie also confirmed his return, saying he was “relieved” to rejoin the company.“Relieved to share that I was asked to rejoin Block and started back this week,” Rennie wrote.Meanwhile, Richard Hesse, who was not laid off but whose entire team was affected, raised concerns about the company’s decision.“Block’s unprecedented layoffs this week have shown me that the company does not possess the same levels of loyalty that I do,” he wrote. Hesse later said he urged leadership to reconsider the cuts to his team.“I spent a lot of Monday and Tuesday convincing leadership that my coworkers are necessary for the company’s success and that I couldn’t do this job alone,” he wrote. Following those discussions, Block rehired some members of his team, the report notes.“While my teams were not returned to full levels, I’ll have enough to continue on. I’m also thankful to have sincere, strong leaders who are willing to listen to my concerns and rectify the situation,” Hesse added.
